It is still possible to use plain gut for the lower strings of baroque period instruments. However the thickness and stiffness of the single filament is an impairment to both sound and playability.
Pirastro Viola D’Amore are the modern version of these classic strings. The development of copper spinning in the 1600’s led to the development of metal wound strings. Pirastro offers this set with silver plated copper winding on the lower strings. It is now possible to have this authentic string with today’s quality standards.
The top 3 gut strings are straight on the tailpiece end and must be tied. The bottom 4 wound strings come with a tie knot already in place.
These are sold as sets only. Individual strings can be special ordered by request.
The standard Viola D’Amore set includes:
- D1: Gut 10.5 ga
- A2: Gut 13.5 ga
- F#3: Gut 15.75 ga
- D4: Aluminum over gut 17.5 ga
- A5: Silver plated copper over gut 18.75 ga
- D6: Silver plated copper over gut 21.75 ga
- A7: Silver plated copper over gut 26.5 ga
