I used to attend symphony and once said to my husband. I wish I had played violin when I was young. Turns out you don’t have to be young. You can be any age. Hope to find someone who teaches adults to play at Southwest. Norma
I started with Evah Pirazzi strings on my remarkable viola rebuilt by House of Weaver. Then I went to Dominant. I was still not fully satisfied, but I knew the instrument had the potential… Then I went to Warchal Brilliant strings. They were an improvement over the first two, but there was still kind of a metallic sound, without as much overtones as I would have wanted. I just now put on the Warchal Amber strings, and I am impressed. the TONE. the OVERTONES. Not as loud as the Brilliants, but I value tone more. I got the metal A string, taking a gamble that it would be more like a violin E string. That is how it turned out. I will probably never go to any other string set. This is it.
Note: my Guarneri copy has a body length of 15 3/4, and I had gone to a 3/4 size tailpiece for better tone (which would require a slightly longer string). Even so, the smaller length string was just right. The package says “714 S.”
The resulting tone reminds me greatly of the professional quality violinists I was with 50 years ago, when they used gut strings. This has far more of the gut tone. It also has some of the gut string stretch, but they will stretch out shortly.
This is the first time I am getting tone so good that I don’t have to force myself to practice. Wow. I recommend the Warchal Amber strings.
I like buying from SWstrings, as the big, famous internet supplier is now also noted for counterfeit products being supplied by bad vendors in the system. I trust SW more in this regard. They also have the best tailpiece prices.
I’ve played on my Franz Werner since high school and have had it for almost 20 years. I don’t know if the model is the exact same, but judging by the price, this is the same level instrument. It got me through college as a music major and I still enjoy playing on it as a freelance musician. This plays much better than a sub-$2000 instrument, especially with a well suited set of synthetic core strings, like Warchal Amber or Pirastro Wondertone.
