while i generally recommend renting in the early stages as kids can size up quickly, when a student does decide to buy as a beginner, or wants to save money, this is the model on the top of my list for a cheap starter instrument.
over the years, several of my students have purchased these violins (and violas), but as one came in with a new half size last week, i thought i’d go ahead and review it now.
set up was correct. everything works properly. sound is surprisingly rich for such a small and cheap instrument. it was replacing a more expensive 1/4 size from a popular student brand, so technically it could be considered a “downgrade”, but it sure doesn’t feel like one.
the little student was so excited that she started practicing a lot more and even gave her violin a name! 🙂
many bargain brands found online elsewhere have terrible reputations and the quality is hit or miss, meaning it is common for them to need “repairs” even when new, which is very disappointing for a beginner. this is not that kind of instrument. on the ones my students have purchased, pegs hold properly, fine tuners are functional, bridge height is reasonably accurate, nut height is correct, sound post stays up, etc…
the one time a student did have an issue, swstrings immediately replaced it with no hassle. (they had purchased this brand of bow alone, and it had a defect where the hair attaches to the frog.)
cheaper instruments also tend to be less durable, but a couple of these violins have been passed down through multiple students in my studio and have held up quite well.
so, if you have heard that a violin under $300 is always a VSO and should be avoided… while generally true, the klaus mueller etude is one of two exceptions i have encountered.
highly recommended for beginners or those on a tight budget.
