Bought D and G, hoping the steel strings would better match my A and E which are metal strings from Warchal. So far so good. Transition between D and A is not as abrupt as before (I was using synthetic core strings). D strings now has volume that matches my A. As to the quality of sound, I haven’t played enough so hard to tell. They don’t feel like metal strings, but one thing I noticed is that if my intonation is correct the strings really open up and sing big. If the intonation is not so precise, not so much. In a way it’s a very good practice.
